What qualifies a group as a branch group in math?

Are you sure you mean a “branch group”? Googling turns up a little information about it, but it seems to be a pretty advanced and obscure topic. I don’t think it’s something that you would be likely to encounter as an undergraduate, let alone as a child.

If you meant something else, like “branch cut” or “Banach space”, they might be more ELI5-able. Otherwise you would probably be better off asking at /r/askmath.
