In the movies when a casket is opened it’s just a skeleton. Is that really what happens? Does the body just cave in on itself?

Depends on the treatment the body gets, the quality of the casket and the length of time it’s been buried. If you dig up a pre-embalming era body buried in a wood casket in normal ground all you’ll find is bones and bits of fabric. If the body was thoroughly embalmed then placed in a high tech alloy and plastic casket that is (mostly) sealed, you might not want to see it six months in. What you’d most likely find is a partially decomposed, partially mummified rotted corpse. six years later the casket will be mostly intact but the body will be a skeleton regardless.

It kinda slowly melts as the bacteria eat it. Turns into a rotten soup in the bottom for a bit and the bacteria slowly eats away at it until there’s nothing left but bone.
