I am not sure what status it has, I thought it was part of Iraq, but in Millennium Dawn game it is independent (early 2000s, before 2003 Iraq War). So basically, what status does Iraqi Kurdistan have? Is it separatist republic which declared secession from Iraq and is de facto independent but internationally unrecognized? Or is it very autonomous federal or confederal subject? Or maybe something else? If it is autonomous subject, what rights does it have?

Technically Iraq is a federal republic but the federation council is not functional. Four governorates (or three, depending on the perspective) make up the Kurdistan Region, which is somewhat autonomous; it has control over some internal affairs, but doesn’t claim independence anymore. It is not de facto independent since the Iraq exercises most of the control including the borders, and I don’t think it ever asked for any international recognition.
