there is a chemical that gets released while adults are asleep that slows urine production while they are asleep so they don’t pee the bed. children don’t produce this chemical yet so they can pee the bed sometimes.

edit: slows not stops

edit2: there is more to this than I thought. see /u/Xenton’s [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/oon747/eli5_what_stops_adults_from_peeing_on_bed_while/h61ztm6)

There are actually two parts of your body that control the release of urine.

One is triggered automatically when your bladder is full or when you think about needing to urinate – when we’re young, we respond to this first “valve” releasing by opening the second.

As adults, we train ourselves to control the second “valve” and only open it when we actively choose to do so. So we tend not to do it when sleeping.

However, if you are drunk or have a dream about going to the bathroom, your brain can be tricked into releasing that second valve, which is why some adults will still wet the bed, albeit rarely.
