What the heck is a charm quark?

It’s a type of quark.

Quarks are subatomic particles that are only found bound together into larger particles, like protons and neutrons. They’re one of the (currently) fundamental building blocks of matter, along a small group of other particles (electrons and it’s family, neutrinos, force carriers).

The charm quark is one of the six types of quarks: up, down, strange, charm, bottom and top.

Don’t read into those names too much, they’re just labels.
