If a 1x1x1 block of steel would have more mass that a 1x1x1 block of wood. I understand that. but then what is weight? I find it difficult to understand what weight actually measures. please help.

Weight measures the amount something gets affected by gravity. So on Earth a one kg mass object has a weight of one kg. But on the moon where there is less gravity the one kg object has a smaller weight, more like .3 kg, because there is less gravity on the moon.
