It came from Britain’s World War II code breaking programme at Bletchley Park in October 1941. The four most senior people at the Park, including Alan Turing and Gordon Welchmann wrote to Prime Minister Winston Churchill telling him that they could not recruit enough people to break enemy codes.

Churchill was fascinated by Bletchley Park and recognised its supreme importance to the War effort, especially in the Battle of the Atlantic that ensured the UK received supplies from the then still officially neutral USA. When he got the memo, Churchill wrote ‘Make sure they have all they want on extreme priority and report to me that this has been done’ and then added ACTION THIS DAY in red ink.

And it worked. Bletchley Park got what it needed, and it helped speed the end of the War.
