What temperature the thermostat should be set to. Just kidding. Ideologically it was capitalism vs. communism. The US and the USSR each thought the other was going to attack. Both countries had the power to destroy each other. So instead of direct battles there were skirmishes and indirect fights. Both countries would support various nations that were at war. It was a cold war because the U.S. and U.S.s.R never directly fought eachother.
