Whats actually happening when you swallow something in the ‘wrong’ way, and it causes intense pain down your chest and back for a few moments?

You basically have a flap like muscle above your wind pipe. When you swallow, the muscle should close off your wind pipe to avoid choking.

If you swallow something in the wrong way it means the muscle failed. The pain in your chest is your body forcing muscles to throw it back up (coughing) and it’s also the bodies way of making you aware that the muscle screwed up.
