A subject (in this case a baby or small child) learns behaviors. Most of those behaviors are acquired by what is called operant conditioning. It’s how behaviors are associated with consequences.
For example: The discriminative stimulus “burning candle” may predictably lead to some positive punishment (addition of an undesirable stimulus, i.e. pain) for the behavior “touch”, decreasing the likelihood of that behavior being repeated for that particular discriminative stimulus in the future. The child has learned not to touch candles (or at least has started to learn not to touch candles).
