Current medical literature pretty much can be summed up as “we don’t know”. Unfortunately that’s the only explanation that can be given.

Neuroscience Master’s student here.
I asked one of my professors this recently. The short answer was: We don’t really know yet.

Long Answer: We don’t know. There’s a few proposed possibilities, such as there being an issue with blood vessels, or the electrical messaging system of the brain. It has also been proposed to be an entirely psychological phenomenon, rather than strictly biological. But right now, these are all very vague and no one knows for sure.
