What’s happening when we get a migraine? Why is it only on one side of the head? Why does it feel like its traveling sometimes?

Neuroscience Master’s student here.
I asked one of my professors this recently. The short answer was: We don’t really know yet.

Long Answer: We don’t know. There’s a few proposed possibilities, such as there being an issue with blood vessels, or the electrical messaging system of the brain. It has also been proposed to be an entirely psychological phenomenon, rather than strictly biological. But right now, these are all very vague and no one knows for sure.
