Considering water and salt are important biologically it’s kind of odd to see the body just kind of drops it out as a result of being sad, what’s the mechanism or reasoning behind this?

Humans are social animals. We cry, so others know we are sad, stressed, vulnerable and need help. It is one of many non-verbal informations we can give others.
