In very general terms and completely without nuance, I propose this:

Nihilism: Nothing in life matters. Don’t bother.

Existentialism: Nothing in life matters, so find your own meaning.

Absurdism: Nothing in life matters, but like… So what?

Nihilism is the rejection of belief systems because “life is meaningless”.
Existentialism is a belief system that emphasizes the individual is free, and therefore ultimately responsible for their life and its development.
Absurdism is the belief that life is silly and pointless and there is no “higher purpose” to life.
Two of these are very similar, but all three have distinct differences.

The others do a good job of explaining it in complete laymans terms, but I want to add one detail many miss about nihilism: Nietzsche did not advocate for it. With the Enlightenment, religion started playing a less important role in society, and without religion, we didn’t have a properly defined moral system. Without God, what’s the point? We either had the choice of succumbing to that, nihilism, or to find our own meaning, which is where existentialism and absurdism come in.
