What’s the difference between a body cleanser and a body wash?

Hello. I did see my question asked previously ([post](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/nl4wgu/eli5_whats_the_difference_between_soap_and_body/)) but not actually answered. People assumed OP meant to ask the difference between body wash and bar soap – but I am specifically asking about body *cleanser* versus body wash.

What is the difference between the two? Are they like a facial cleanser and a face wash where the cleansing is done before the wash? Or are they not supposed to be used together?

There’s sort of a continuum of moisturizing to cleaning.

Lotion — body wash — body cleanser — hand soap — bar soap
Oily skin needs more soap, dry skin needs more moisturizing. Filthy sweaty people need soap regardless. So you sort of have options for the different situations.

You have a similar thing with shampoos that “condition hair” or are “less harsh”. With hair, you don’t actually want to clean the hair completely. If you do, you destroy it. You just want to clean the surface and replenish the oils.
