What’s the difference between a free parameter and a degree of freedom?

I was recently told that they may not be the same thing. What’s the difference between the two? Is there any context where they’re the same thing?

In some contexts, they may be the same thing. Usually “degree of freedom” refers to kinematic/dynamic parameters (position and momentum, mainly), at least in my experience.
