What’s the difference between a hotel, motel and hostel?

All I think I know is that hotels are the only kind to have pools (?) and fit the biggest amount of people in them and stuff but then what’s the real difference between them all, are they just named differently from biggest to smallest (hotel – > hostel – > motel)?

Hotels don’t necessarily have pools.

A hotel is the ‘standard’ if you like. Bed, room, shower, toilet. Maybe you’ll have food available maybe not.

A motel is a hotel, but is typically built to service a particular road or highway. Motor Hotel.

A hostel is altogether simpler. There might be multiple beds in one room, communal wash and toilet facilities, maybe no facilities for food at all.
