The big difference is how many people come to the land being colonized or conquered. If it is not that many and they are mostly military, then it is conquest and the relatively small number of people run the government, often by using a puppet ruler.

Colonization is when large numbers of people come over and plan to live there. They start farms and businesses and have children and in general make their lives there. Colonization is easier if the land is relatively empty due to being thinly populated, or if diseases have wiped out a lot of the original inhabitants.

Conquest is the act of taking over territory. You can conquer land and turn it into a colony. I assume though you mean wars of annexation. When a country annexes a territory it becomes part of the country that is directly controlled by it as its own territory.

Colonisation originally means establishing colonies, basically settling land with your people. But colonies in the modern sense means taking over territories but not directly annexing them, instead creating separate government’s and entities to manage the new territory or just using existing structures to control it indirectly.

Basically when you annex a territory you make it part of your country and rule it just as another part of your country while with colonies you take over control of a territory so that you can exploit it without making it a part of your country.

The difference is somewhat fluent in the sense of late 19th century colonialism, but in essence it depends on whether or not you consider the population of the subjugated country as somewhat of a peer with recognized claims to the occupied land, in which case you conquer their territory or whether you consider them backwards savages, essentially part of the fauna of a terra nullius that is up for graps, in which case you transplant your own population there to establish a colony.

You have a big house. You live in the house with your family. You make the decisions in the house. the entire house is decorated to your liking.

Colonizing is when I show up at your house (with or without consent) then told my parent, my relative, my friends to all come to the house im staying at. we all took rooms (with or without consent) and started decorating it our place. You living in the house with your family, and all the people I pulled in, you don’t make the decision in the house. AND, I may or may not decide to boot your and your family out of your rooms because I like them better.

Conquering is when I show up at your house, break in, beat you up infront of your family, and announces: You’re my b*tch now, prison style. I may or may not bring more people in to your house. You still live in the house with your family, you don’t get to make the decision in the house, and I get to decorate it with w/e I want. If I decide that you and your family are a eye sore, I might kick you guys out from the house.
