The markers are filled with a specific dye called “leuco” dye. This dye is clear until it reacts with the zinc embedded in the paper. They get different colors through different forms of leuco dye.

The pigments in the paints and markers don’t have color until they react with an acid. The paper has an acid in it, so the dye becomes activated, giving it color.

If you use it on regular paper, and then run some lemon juice on it, the color will then show up.
