what’s the science behind Crayola’s mess free paints/markers?

It’s called color wonder and they have it for like finger paints and markers and paints and can only be used on special paper but then doesn’t stain ??

The pigments in the paints and markers don’t have color until they react with an acid. The paper has an acid in it, so the dye becomes activated, giving it color.

If you use it on regular paper, and then run some lemon juice on it, the color will then show up.
