: When making any animated show episode, is the voice acting done earlier or the animation?

If the animation is done first, do the actors have to remain strictly to script leaving no room for improv and also have to nail their timing?
And if the acting is done first, how do they time it? Do they have to do it blindly, only by imagination?

It depends on the medium, for cartoons the script is written first, then the animation and finally the voice actors will review the animation and match their voice to the scene.

You can see the voice actor for Pikachu record her lines on YouTube.

I watched the voice actor for Aerith in the new Final Fantasy 7 play the game and get to the part her character spoke and she was so emotional and I want to know how her recording process went, did she only see story boards? Did she get to see blocky grayscale characters with basic features? Did she voice a fully rendered scene? I have always loved seeing the VO process and general behind-the-scenes stuff.

yes. voice acting is done first, with many takes, then the episode is animated so that the animation matches the acting. if they have an animation problem, they might need to do the voice acting again, where the actors need to sync their lips.

Most of the time, the voices are recorded first — it’s only on rare occasions (like the original Fleischer POPEYE cartoons) where the animation’s done and then voices are added, or for foreign language cartoons dubbed into English.

It makes a lot more sense to animate to a dialogue track than to dub to an already-animated track….
