when snails move, there are ‘ripples’ on the underside of their foot, but the ripples seem to be moving the wrong way. Why is this?

It’s called a metachronal wave, and it could happen in any direction.
It’s just a case of lifting and moving bit bit at a time, and the direction of which bit moves first is more personal preference, any direction will still work.
