When someone tells you that you “look tired”, what exactly are they seeing?

I know things like dark circles or bags under the eye can indicate tiredness, but what is the body doing to make it happen?

Bags under the eyes, slouched posture, slow rate of speech. LPT, I once told someone they looked tired on a first date when I wasn’t thinking, don’t do that! Apparently some women read a lot into that comment beyond them literally looking tired.
