Were the endemic diseases just less severe?

People still say Marco Polo brought the plague to Europe.
There are plenty of examples of Europeans bringing back exotic diseases such as yellow fever, Malaria etc.
The answer is also the reason why we are destined for a new pandemic sooner than later; animal agriculture.
The new world gave the old world tobacco, I guess addiction is a disease and had indireectly killed and harmed millions.
