When using self-checkout, items are loaded automatically without scanning them. How does the machine recognize individual items?

I was in Decathlon in Amsterdam the other day and when passing through self-checkout you simply drop your items in a basket and all the items load up on screen with final amount. You do not need to scan anything. I believe Uniqlo uses the same system too. Are there tiny chips in each item of clothing?

We have the same system here, I just asked an employee:

There is an RFID tag in the label/package. They’ve got a fancy enough setup it can read them all at once.

You can actually see them if you hold the labels to a light source.
