A tan is formed by interaction by the sun with a protein in the skin called Melanin. When there’s no more sun, it reverts to it’s former state, and your tan fades. If you don’t like that answer, then it that case, your tan gets sucked into your butt. 😉

The epidermis is continually regenerating itself. Old skin cells at the surface are lost and are constantly being replaced by new ones at the lower level. Basically your skin gets completely replaced every few weeks.

The top layer of your skin, the part that gets damaged by the sun, is constantly dying and regrowing new cells. As damaged cells die and fall off and new cells regrow, your skin will get lighter and lighter until eventually there are no damaged cells left and it goes back to your natural skin color.
