There is also a massive overpopulation problem. If there were less people, the scarcity of housing wouldn’t be as bad. But alas, humans can’t control their baser instincts.

Small starter homes are no longer being built. Builders don’t make any profit if they buy a $50k plot of land, build a small 1,200 sq ft home at a cost of $75,000 and sell it for $125k. Profits are better to spend $150k on the build and sell a 3,000 sq ft home for $400k. So, the new starter home is… apartments and Condos only. Density for profit. You want privacy and space, HA! It’s gonna cost big from now on. ( it sucks )

Plenty of it around, surprised to see this not being said. It’s just being held onto & priced out of reach for people. At least, obviously, speaking for the USA where we have no politicians on our side preventing overseas companies & greedy corporations from buying all the housing & only renting it.

Edit: Thanks for my 1st gold, stranger.

Margaret Thatcher & the Tories sold off most of the social housing stock throughout the UK and haven’t replaced them.

In Australia, even before covid, there had been a trend towards couples living in a house instead of sharehousing. This reduced the capacity of houses.

Over 80,000 were purchased by black rock financial alone. Zillow has bought 10,000. They are altering supply and causing prices to skyrocket while taking available homes for families. They do this with straight cash offers that a normal person can’t compete with.
