Where do all the roads come from? And who connected them all?

Back in the days, long before cars were around, most “roads” were basically just paths that connected towns and villages. Nobody built these, they were just trampled down by countless feet and wheels of people going places, crushing the plants that used to be there.

Cobbled and paved roads were often just built on top of the existing paths. You can still see that in many countries in Europe: Roads usually lead from village to village to village, rather than going in a straight line like American highways often do.

Footpaths and bridle paths were upgraded to major roads as the traffic increased, then with modern construction new roads were planned linking large towns and cities to each other, by government paid contractors.
