Where do photons go when they are absorbed by matter?

They stop existing.
It helps to picture photons as what they really are: ripples in a Quantum field, basically a package of energy moving through space
It’s completely destroyed. All of its energy is absorbed into an electron, which itself jumps to a higher energy state. The photon no longer exists.
