You mean where do they put all the holes from where the roots suck out all the minerals for the tree to feed on?

Have you seen sidewalks lifted up in parts or cracked when there’s a nearby tree? Usually the roots have grown and pushed the dirt ‘up’. Once it’s compacted so much, the concrete ends up giving forming the teepee or cracked sidewalk.
(There are other things that can crack sidewalk too, but this is just another of them)
The root compresses the soil into the soil. It’s like if you push your finger into styrofoam.
