They did not go anywhere.. Our skin is elastic think of plastic with certain limit of elasticity. So once it reach the end point it couldn’t go back to the way it was before just like that of our skin.
Hence why people who are extremely obese often time went for tummy tuck after they lose certain amount of fat due to the flap-excess skin that they have. Over time skin also loss its elasticity (lack of collagen) hence resulting in skin becoming saggy and not as firm as when you are younger. But they are ways to deal with saggy skin ( collagen-food sources, botox etc..)

Skin is usually elastic and can retain its shape. But as people age or the skin gets stretched past a point of return, it doesn’t go back. What usually happens is it either retracts, or just hangs like ab empty sack. Most people who lose lots of weight end up getting surgery to remove the extra skin.

If you lose the weight slowly, your extra skin tissue gets “absorbed” by the body. If you lose the fat very fast you don’t allow your body any time to do this. This also depends on age and on personal physiological differences.
