where does plant matter come from?

If i had a pot with 100g of soil, and grow a 20g plant, will i have less soil?

Interestingly enough, most of the matter comes from the carbon in the air. Through photosynthesis the plant splits the CO2 molecules, keeps the Carbon as a building block and throws out the O2 for us to breathe.

It absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and converts it to oxygen and glucose (sugar basically) through a process called photosynthesis. Basically all of the plant’s mass is from carbon in the atmosphere and water in the soil (and a tiny portion of minerals and micronutrients that are dissolved in the water in the soil)
