where does the “Circulation” fan option pull air from?

I have my AC unit in my basement where it’s a constant 68°F, will the HVAC pull air from where it’s located downstairs and blow it through both the upstairs and downstairs zones if I set each thermostat to “circulate”?

I know that all it does is set the fan to low every so often to circulate the air, but where does it get the air from?

I’m also aware that it goes through air filters more often.

Since it’s in the basement, I’m assuming it’s your central unit? It’ll pull air from wherever it always pulls from. Typically that’ll be an air return vent or vents; it’s pretty common to have a large vent to act as the intake, though there’s also setups where there’s a bunch of smaller vents all spread through the building. The side you put your filter on in the HVAC stack, that’s the side your return vent is on, and you can follow the ductwork to see where it goes if you’re not already aware of which vent(s) are for return air. It would be highly unlikely to pull from the basement, especially if the basement isn’t finished.

Now if it was an HVAC system like in a mobile home, generally that return vent is directly on the unit itself since it’s right there in generally a hallway or something. These are typically used just in mobile homes.
