From the air. Cool air can hold less water vapor in it than warm air, and AC units cool down warm air to pump it into wherever they are cooling. This means water tends to condense on the heat exchange elements of the AC unit and drips down.

the water is in the air and it condenses onto the cold surface of the ac evaporator. it’s distilled water and pure, except for any dirt or mold growing inside the ac machine itself.

the same effect happens with an ice cold beverage on a hot day, the can or glass will be covered with tiny droplets of water, to be caught by the coaster.

also happens on your mirror or window in the bathroom if you take a long hot shower. the moisture or “steam” in the air will cool down and deposit on the cold mirror glass, or bathroom window if it’s cold outside.
