They’re called data scouts these days. You have an app on your phone and you track where the ball is on the court as well as when the ball goes out, shots taken, goals etc.. this information gets sent to the database.

The purpose is to stop past-posting, or betting on an outcome after it has happened and making money. By having someone input the data in real time, people can’t listen to radio commentary and bet before it gets displayed on tv which has a delay etc.

Scorekeepers are responsible for recording the stats of sports game (was this an incompletion or a drop?), much like how others are responsible for updating the in-game scoreboard. They input this data into the league’s personal collection, as well as the public’s viewing
