Why a lens I shoot small things called a “macro” lens instead of “micro”?

Lets say I’m shooting a bee hive (like today’s hot post); a lens I shoot the hive is called “macro” lens which doesn’t make any sense to me since I’m shooting in a micro scale.

Micro Photography is usually through a microscope and 10x magnification or more. Macro Photography is 10x magnification or less. It’s macro because it’s bigger than micro.

It takes a thing that’s tiny and makes it into a bigger image. The “macro” is referring to the image the lens produces, not the thing you’re taking a picture of. Same convention as is used for zoom or wide-angle.
