why a virus/bug affects so many seemingly disconnected bodily systems?

Currently in bed with a stomach bug that’s making the rounds through our family. How does this crud affect so many systems? Nausea (digestion), extreme dizziness (inner ear?), aching joints/lymph nodes/bottoms of feet (???).

Why? *Cries in ELI5* Whyyyy?

Fun fact – this bug got my two year old first, so I couldn’t even try to explain to her what was happening like a 5 y/o, just follow her lead and hold her.

A lot of the symptoms we commonly perceive with being sick is often moreso caused by your own immune system sounding the alarm and going into a frenzied combat mode to try and eradicate or flush the invader out. coughing, sneezing, runny nose, aches and pains, feeling cruddy or lethargic, fever, nausea and vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, sinus, all responses or side effects of your body trying to combat the invader.
