why a virus/bug affects so many seemingly disconnected bodily systems?

Currently in bed with a stomach bug that’s making the rounds through our family. How does this crud affect so many systems? Nausea (digestion), extreme dizziness (inner ear?), aching joints/lymph nodes/bottoms of feet (???).

Why? *Cries in ELI5* Whyyyy?

Fun fact – this bug got my two year old first, so I couldn’t even try to explain to her what was happening like a 5 y/o, just follow her lead and hold her.

A virus attacks a specific type of your cells. The problem is that some cell types are common across your entire body.

And then symptoms can actually be secondary. Most symptoms aren’t caused by the virus but by your immune system fighting the virus, and some viruses kinda open the door for other germs. The flu for example weakens your immune system to cause a bunch of bacterial infections across your body

It seems my family had the same virus and it was nasty
