Why and how do headphones/earbuds lose quality with age?

As time passes audio coming out from it isn’t as clear as it was before and the sound quality goes down. What is causing this? Is it just depreciating in the same way other materials do?

Sometimes the wire breaks. Sometimes the batteries go weak. Sometimes you pack the earbud filter full of ear and pocket junk. Sometimes there is damage to the little speakers. You aren’t old enough to have decent headphones go bad from anything besides breaking them.
