why and how do we yawn? Is it even related to tiredness?

Yes, it is. Your body is trying to get more oxygen to keep you awake.

The group yawning is caused by a trigger of primal reflex: One watcher yawns, other one sees it and yawns too. Which mean the first one is tired and his body wants more oxygen, the other one is getting ready in case of attack. In a herd it is observable not just with humans, but animals too. Evolution caused this, so everyone yawns at the same time and not randomly.

Yawn is basically opening your mouth wide and inhaling to the bottom of your lungs, to refresh you a little. Sometimes accompanied by shedding a tear, to get your eyes wet and less tired.

I was taught it is a means of the body to inhale more air in a single breath. The act also wakes us up. If a room is warm and stuffy and isn’t ventilated well it would make me yawn.
