Why and how does having one eye mess with depth perception?

Each of our eyes sees a slightly different angle of the world around us. We don’t notice it because our brain “fixes” the inputs so it seems like we are looking with one “camera.”

Close one eye and hold out your thumb so it blocks something like a light switch that is a few feet away. Now close that eye and open your other eye while keeping your thumb where it is. You can probably see that light switch now. It’s not being blocked by your thumb.

Because we have this binocular vision, we can tell the relative depths in our field of vision – our brain is using the two images. But if we only have one eye, we don’t have our built-in other view. Everything becomes flat like a TV image.
