The simple answer is Camouflage, They blend in better than if they were painted bright pink

ALL naval war vessels are grey.

Its called Haze grey, and you guessed it, blends very well with haze.

Also due to the color of shadows, a haze grey also hides/masks vertical structures from afar.

TLDR: painting it grey provides +10 to stealth at sea.

They tried a number of different patterns to camouflage boats and that gray is the best one. They also tried painting ships with wild stripes, thinking that it would make it harder to tell the size and direction at a distance. I think they called it dazzle camouflage. It’s worth looking up, it’s a wild look for a navy
