I assume because of the income. When you earn $100 per month you can’t really afford to spend $20 on a dvd for a single movie. That’s how it started at least.

Nowadays I don’t know. Probably because the habit, and the craziness that’s happening with all the streaming companies.

Because there’s money in it, and hardly any negative consequences.

You pay a few dollars for a bootleg DVD and those few dollars go a lot farther in other countries than they do in the US.

Minimal respect for or enforcement of intellectual property rights.

And they’re poor enough to be worth their time/efforts.

One thing I didn’t see mentioned is the fact that Hollywood can’t pursue charges in a different country if that countries government isn’t willing to do it. Sure, they can go and pursue charges against the people buying it, but they can’t send the cops over to those countries to do anything about the people making and selling them.

Theater workers don’t get paid a lot so they’re quite willing to hand over copies of the movies, or in the case of CAMs, don’t care when people bring in cameras to record the movie.

As to why they’re popular there, it’s much cheaper to get a pirated copy of the latest movie than to pay the ticket price for it. Whether in terms of money, convenience, or both.
