Why are birds so good at avoiding getting hit by cars?

There will be times I’m on normal roads or even driving fast on a highway and have had very close encounters with birds flying aross the front of my car.

I never see dead birds on the road so I just assume they have some kind of special airflow mechanism that allowed them to avoid accidents.

If you ever hit a buzzard they puke and shit as a defensive mechanism. Given they eat carrion can be one of the more disgusting things you’ll encounter. They go for roadkill so it can happen.

By my early 20’s i had observed something similar, Birds seem to narrowly avoid being hit by cars. So I didn’t slow down when a bird was in the road… Until I hit one. They don’t *all* get out of the way 😳

Large fast-moving object (apparently) trying to grab you. To evolution, a car is a predator that can’t juke for shit. They evolved avoiding them.

Some species of swallow that made their nests near freeway bridges rapidly evolved to having shorter wings due to their need for manueveeability.

I’ve hit a couple, and I saw someone hit a hawk one time. Thing just spiraled off the edge off the cliff.
