Why are bullet sizes usually in decimal and not just a whole number?

For example, why 5.56mm and not just 6mm? Why 7.62mm instead of just 8?

Bullets are measured either in caliber or in metric.

In caliber the decimal is a percentage of an inch. so a .45 cal bullet is .45 inches wide.

Metric ones use mm to describe it so a 5.56 is also a .223 bullet (for historic reasons these actual measurements are almost never the actual 100% ones)
