Why are cars today so big compared to their older models?

I’m not just talking about pickup trucks that have gotten huge, but rather cars in general. Take a look at the 5th generation Honda Civic hatchback and compare it to the newest Honda Civic Hatchback model. Not only did the car gain approximately 1,000lbs/453Kg, but its length, height, and space drastically changed. Sure it’s a 30 year difference but even other car models from the early 2010s compared to their same models today are way bigger and heavier in just under a decade Why is this?

Economy class cars of 10 and more years ago were really too small. A Corolla from that time is only comfortable for people 5’6″ and shorter. It doesn’t make sense to make a car so limiting for buyers, and if someone else makes a better sized economy class car, they will snap up the market.

Today’s economy class cars are about where they should be – big enough for the majority of single drivers.

It seems to depend on the market and the manufacturer’s intent on marketing that model. Over the last 50 years that I have been watching cars, they have changed size and shape many times. They may just be trying to move the appeal of the Civic up in the market so they add room and features.

Lol big? You haven’t seen been until you’ve seen an old skool Cadillac or like a 1972 Buick Electra 225. 😂😂😂

Never mind like a 1950s Packard.
