Hi, I have a Bachelor of Music in music production! Basically, a compressor unifies or evens out the dynamic range of a track (such as a guitar or voice). It isn’t meant to make anything sound “good”- what it really does is create less of a dynamic range so that the instrument can have a consistent presence in the song. Things like lead vocals are often compressed “hard” (to a greater extent so that there is less dynamic range) so that they stick out and stay present.

Basically compressors eliminate natural dips/rises in the volume of a sound. Hope this helps!
