I get it in the context of a very outdated one, but a driver from a month ago shouldn’t be leading to crashes, so why update?
It ends up feeling like the driver works fine till a new one comes out and it starts failing.

Most of these answers I don’t think properly answer the question. All software goes out of date and required updating, but drivers are a bit different as to why they require updating. Drivers are used to operate the actual hardware of a computer so they need to be able to run at a privilege level that allows them to do so, but these permissions also allow the driver to access potentially sensitive information on your computer.
Drivers frequently have exploits that allow a hacker to access to this sensitive data. Fortunately for us these exploits are usually found by researches and published to that the drivers developer can patch the exploit and release a new version.
