Why are cracks in a home foundations bad?

If the basement floor has cracks in it, or on the outside and inside walls of the home, what can it lead to? Can the house collapse?

Your walls and roof are heavy, plus they can get pushed on by loads like snow or wind. Your floor has all your junk plus you as additional forces.

That force has to go somewhere – it goes to the foundation.

If the foundation cracks, that may be a sign it’s unstable or weak. If the foundation fails your house might collapse.

Cracks in the foundation can lead to leaks, and water can cause severe damage to a home. And if a crack gets bad enough the house can shift or collapse in a worst case scenario.
