So fridges use this thing called a heat sink to operate. In very basic terms, and i took thermodynamics like 4 years ago so im rusty, it uses refrigerant to basically suck out the heat from inside and trys to dump it outside. If you ever feel the back of the fridge its actually warm on the back of it. Im guessing they also want a way of regulating the cold temp on the inside which would require it to be well insulated and you wouldnt want it to go to cold or else it would freeze everything. I keep my chest freezer in my unheated garage.
Goods in there are supposed to be frozen, so below freezing ambient temperatures are ok. Saves a bit of electricity overall, and frees up space in or near my kitchen.
If I kept my fridge out there, all of my stuff would spoil in the winter, since fridges do not normally have a way to heat the interior above freezing.
