Did you forget about summer?

Really old brownstowns and stuff in NYC on the first floor you can sometimes still see sealed up
Little ducts where the milkman would deliver the milk and cheese 100+ years ago and it was insulated to keep it cold like a fridge

Lots of good answers. Only read through top ones so it maybe answered later. We need smart fridges. Intake ambient temperatures that are 3-5 degrees Celsius and in the summer exhaust compressor outside. A simple flap system controls the input and output. I’m in Canada so it totally makes sense.

Not quite the fridge but it is a cabinet exposed to outside air.

So fridges use this thing called a heat sink to operate. In very basic terms, and i took thermodynamics like 4 years ago so im rusty, it uses refrigerant to basically suck out the heat from inside and trys to dump it outside. If you ever feel the back of the fridge its actually warm on the back of it. Im guessing they also want a way of regulating the cold temp on the inside which would require it to be well insulated and you wouldnt want it to go to cold or else it would freeze everything. If you just wanted it cold

I keep my chest freezer in my unheated garage.

Goods in there are supposed to be frozen, so below freezing ambient temperatures are ok. Saves a bit of electricity overall, and frees up space in or near my kitchen.

If I kept my fridge out there, all of my stuff would spoil in the winter, since fridges do not normally have a way to heat the interior above freezing.

Here in Sweden where i live (not very far north) we can have -20°C in the Winter and this summer we hit 37°C. This variation of almost 60° wouldn’t be too reliable. Right now at little below freezing is good, i can leave a drink outside to chill it.
